U.S.S. SCARAB
NX-10018

CLASSIFICATION: Federation First Strike Warship

The Scarab Class of vessels were developed toward the end of the Dominion War, as a fusion of the research and design improvements created by the Defiant and Steamrunner projects. The U.S.S. Scarab is a heavily armed warship, with extremely high short-range burst speeds, remarkable maneuverability, and advanced defensive shield technologies. With its speed and agility, it is perfect for in-close combat situations, and its ability to hang in a fire fight makes it a tough little ship. Like its namesake, the Scarab has a remarkably strong "shell" comprised of a combination of multi-phasic regenerative shielding, sandwiched ablative hull armor, and a new energy-collecting technology tied into the shield grid that absorbs 60 % of the destructive force of incoming fire and re-routes it through special plasma adapters back to the shield emitter generators to strengthen the defense grid. These integrated systems allow the ship to take a great deal of punishment while protecting the ship's major systems from severe damage.

The Scarab class echoes the Steamrunner class in the attached nacelles and the low slung long range tactical sensor/weapons pod. This warship is armed with four phaser pulse cannons fore, two quantum torpedo launchers on the top of the disk and four on the weapon/ sensor pod along with a new circular 360 degree emitter located on the underside of the weapon's pod. The phaser arrays on the top and bottom of the command hull are state of the art and need little recycle time during a hot exchange of fire. The Scarab has exceeded the firepower limits of the Defiant by 25% using less space and energy. Considered a highly successful prototype, the Scarab class is slated for future production.

Model Details

The arrow head command hull was bashed from the bottom of a SW Imperial Cruiser, (notice the tip of the cruiser used as the undercarriage). I sheathed it in thin styrene to give it a smooth skin, and layered it with thicker layers of "armor". The nacelle pylons are scratch-built from sheet styrene, and the nacelles are modified Ent. "C" nacelles with the plasma grill removed and the bussards replaced with the end tips of two other nacelles. The weapons pod is a standard pod from a Runabout kit, set into indentations in the "armor" layer of the hull. The base color is Navy Aggressor Grey with lighter hand mixed Aztec highlights. Decals are from the decal box...and the lettering is Chartpak Presstype.
