U.S.S. ANDROMEDA
NCC-80458

CLASSIFICATION: Research Vessel

Description: The U.S.S. Andromeda was commissioned in 2374 as a vessel of cultural and theological exploration. While it’s mission is general sociological research as a prelude to first contact, the crew is specifically versed in gathering and analyzing information of a newly discovered society’s concepts of religion and cosmology.

It was during the Dominion conflict that the Federation learned how powerfully a god-concept motivated the Vorta and the Jem’Hadar to fight tirelessly and mercilessly for the Founders. Determined not to let such a underestimation occur again, Starfleet's Department of Cultural Anthropology commissioned the ship and staffed it predominantly with members of the Vulcan, Betazed and Bajoran races. In addition to that crew compliment, there are highly-regarded theological experts from each of the major Federation cultures on-board the vessel.

The Andromeda's sensor-enhanced saucer section attaches directly to the secondary hull. The disk terminates in two large shuttle bays and continues on down the secondary hull's deck to a plasma accelerator, a unit that intensifies the energy generated by the warp core. This highly charged plasma is then routed to nacelles of an advanced design sprung from a compact version of the powerful Ambassador class nacelles. This modification allows the ship to maintain a maximum speed of 9.8, for distances that rival the Sovereign Class flag ship of the Federation. It is sheathed in an experimental variation of ablative/duridium armor, not only for protection but as a sensor-scrambling shielding. It's armaments are simple and minimal, but represent the latest advances in multi-modal phasers and quantum torpedoes. It's enhanced imaging sensor arrays are positioned on the ventral face of the saucer section and allow the research teams to perform the surface and deep archeological scans needed to evaluate a society's complex belief structures and history.

Model Details

The model was bashed from an Enterprise B Excelsior variant, with pieces from a Danube class run-about, and adapted Ambassador class nacelles from a three Enterprise set. It was named for a good friend who, like myself, jokingly believes she may actually be from the Pleiades. Her nick-name, not surprisingly, is Andromeda.
