CLASSIFICATION: Long Range Escort

The Nocturne Class frigate arose from the development work done on the Defiant Class, notably the design concept of integrating the warp nacelles directly into the primary hull. Its compact, low sensor profile creates a sleek craft that is remarkably maneuverable despite its size. However, the Nocturne Class shares the Defiant Class’ curse of being almost too powerful for its size. The use of massive nacelles provides exceptional speed and cruising distance, but required new advances in Structural Integrity Theory to prevent the ship from tearing itself apart at high warp. As a result, many new classes of ship are integrating this new internal force field technology. Theoretically, these advances could allow a ship that has had 50% of its hull compromised to continue at warp through the use of its redundant and multi-layered structural integrity fields.

Commissioned as a multi-purpose ship, Starfleet Engineering designed the Nocturne class with an interchangeable mission module aft of the primary disk. This "tail" allows Starfleet Operations to replace the standard shuttle/sensor module with mission specific equipment. The docking unit can even allow for a module the size of an Excelsior class secondary hull if necessary for colony transport and deployment. Despite its commission as a multi-mission vessel, its development and construction during a time of war resulted in an impressive offensive armament.

The Nocturne class sports twelve multi-modal phaser arrays, in addition to the standard quantum torpedo launchers. This class of vessel named for its ventral aspect which evokes the image of an owl, a night hunter.
